The Palace of the Grand Master
The Palace of the Grand Master, the most imposing building of medieval
Rhodes, is at the end of the Street of the Knights. It was built in the
14th century, at the highest point of the medieval city, to the northwest,
and its volume dominates the city and its harbour. It was a strong structure,
indissoluble linked with the fortifications, and played an active role
in the defence of the city, forming the last refuge of the population
in the event of the city falling to the enemy. Inside the Palace, the
visitor can admire the courtyard with the marble statues, which is decorated
with magnificent buildings of medieval architecture and can host up to
1.500 persons.
Throughout the year, a number of artistic events take place on the island
including “Sound & Light” performances at the Palace of the Grand
Masters, Greek tragedies and folk dances at the Medieval Theatre. Here
at the courtyard with the marble statues, is the ideal location to organise
the Opening or the Closing Ceremony, and provide catering services, a
theme programme presented by professional artists.
"Sound & Light" SHOW
It is a great tourist attraction, for visitors from all over the world.
Its historical monuments cover a long period of history that is reflected
in its towns. Through the “Light and Sound” system, the viewer experiences
the Medieval Period during the times of the Knights of Rhodes and the
Crusaders who together with the people of the island united in a common
struggle against the attacks of the Turks, led by Suleiman the Magnificent
in 1552. The story tells about the stage of siege and ends with the conquest
of Rhodes by the Turks and departure of the crusades of St. Jean of Jerusalem
and the last Grand Master , Phillipe de Villers de L’ isle Adam on 1st
January 1523.
The whole programme is accompanied with music and grounded by several
coloured light spots to the walls of the Grand Master, windows, battlements.
The show lasts 50 minutes.
Afandou Golf course Rodos
Afandou, on the beautiful island of Rhodes, is the new name for the most
complete Golf Club resort in the Mediterranean. In character, atmosphere
and feeling, Rhodes is like no other island in the Aegean, and Afandou
is all you expect a golf club resort to be. And more, since it occupies
one of the loveliest spots in Rhodes, Afandou Bay, (22 km from Rhodes
Town), on the road to Lindos, where the temple of Athena balances on a
clifftop above faultless sand.
Features:
One 18-hole, par-73, golf course (6800 yards), designed by Britain's world
famous golf course architect, Donald Harradine. Since May 1973, the 18
holes have been made available to golfers. The course's tactical features
are a challenge to good scoring, both for amateurs and professionals.
The trees, fairways, and greens are laid with different grasses selected
to keep the course green throughout the year. The Golf Club is open all
year round. Admission fees are nominal and caddies, caddy carts, golf
clubs and balls, as well as instructions, are available at moderate hire
charges.
Climate:
The sky above Rhodes has been called "The great blue dome of the
Aegean", and it is the combination of this everpresent sun and the
mild climate that gives Rhodes its special appeal. Winter temperatures
are in the 50?s and 60?s. In spring the weather is blissful, the flowers
are in bloom and the island is at its most ravishingly beautiful. In summer
- well that's another story
How to get to Rhodes:
There are regular daily flights from Athens, operated by Olympic Airways,
Aegean, Cronus or Air Greece. Major airline companies operate charter
flights during the spring and summer seasons from places all over Europe.
